Democratic Presidential Candidates Meet with Detroit Delta Workers Fighting for Machinists Union Vote

Delta Air Lines Flight Attendants and Fleet Services Workers vying for a vote to join the IAM met with three Democratic presidential candidates on Monday, July 29 to raise awareness about the carrier’s anti-union tactics. U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) as well as U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) met separately with the workers.

Delta workers also rallied for a union vote in Dearborn with local labor and community leaders. U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) spoke at the rally.

This is part of the IAM’s nationwide effort to organize roughly 40,000 Delta flight attendants and fleet service workers.

The IAM’s organizing campaign is facing stiff resistance from Delta. That includes a company flyer telling workers to spend money on video games instead of union dues, a message that went viral and was met with widespread scorn. More than 70 members of the U.S. House and at least 12 U.S. Senators, including several presidential candidates, have called on Delta CEO Ed Bastian to stop the company’s attack on its own workforce.
